There is a bit of a love/hate relationship with back to school time. The rush to find school supplies and clothes is enough in itself. The controlled chaos may feel a bit overwhelming when you throw in tryouts and practices for sports, school lunches and snacks, and, oh yes, the need to keep kids healthy and safe through their academic years!
We’re here to support families in the area of oral care, and we do so both in and out of the office. In the office, we perform dental treatments in a manner that avoids unnecessary fear in our young patients. Out of the office, we support oral health with tips aimed at preventing oral decline. Here are a few suggestions for students:
- See the dentist. This is an obvious suggestion. We have included it here, though, because the school year can be incredibly busy. That’s why summertime is a great time to schedule checkups and cleanings. But that leaves one more visit that is needed to complete recommended care. Consider scheduling it now, before the busy holiday season is upon us.
- Get a mouth guard from the dentist. Mouth guards are required for most young athletes, and they are available in most sporting goods stores. However, studies have shown that custom-fit mouth guards are ideal because they protect the entire arch of teeth, not just those in a certain area. Mouth guards, or night guards, are also beneficial for students who may clench or grind due to stress.
- Parents! Remember that your kids need supervision with their oral care habits! Routine follow-up may be necessary during the beginning of the school year, when excitement may lead a child to rush out the door without taking some time to brush.
- Provide the tools that kids need. These include a water bottle (and encouragement to sip often), sugarless gum (to dilute residue that can lead to cavities), and a travel toothbrush (especially relevant for teens in braces).
Routine dental care is much more pleasant than needing restorative treatment. We’re here to serve families from a wide area, including Houston, Mesquite, and Grand Prairie. Contact us to schedule your visit.
