Being a parent means getting treated to sloppy kisses and the most loving hugs you could imagine. It also means a lot of responsibility. You want to see a happy smile on your child’s face more often than not, and will do just about anything to secure that ideal. One of the ways we help families do this is with dental sealants. One of the primary focuses in our offices in Houston, Mesquite, and Grand Prairie is to prevent dental disease in our pediatric patients.
Oral health is paramount in a child’s life, saving her from unnecessary pain and fear of seeing the dentist. Once a child’s six-year molars have come in, we consider how dental sealants can facilitate long-term oral health.
Why Dental Sealants
The point of applying sealants is to “seal out” debris and bacteria. The back teeth, in particular, are susceptible to decay due to the deep grooves in their chewing surface. Sealant material acts as a barrier to prevent buildup, thus decreasing the opportunity for bacteria to accumulate in these hard-to-reach places.
There are several benefits that are obtained through this preventive treatment aside from the significant reduction in cavities (86% in the first year, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry). They include:
- Time savings. When restorative dental care is needed, it requires a longer visit and, depending on the tolerance of the patient, it may also require sedation. This often means that a parent has to rearrange an already-busy schedule to free up a morning or afternoon to spend in the dentist’s office. Treatment that prevents cavities can therefore save you time and unnecessary hassle.
- Money savings. Preventive dentistry is much more cost-effective than having to see the dentist for restorative treatments, even if you have dental insurance. Sealants last for several years and are monitored during routine exams and cleanings.
- Simplicity. To apply dental sealants is an easy process, even with children. This is because no anesthetic is necessary. The sealant material is applied in liquid form and then hardened to the tooth. Much easier and less stressful than having a filling!
