Calcium is a mineral that we often associate with strong bones. Often, we don’t give much thought to whether or not we, or our children, are getting enough of this powerful resource. When we’re serving milk and other products that are enriched with vitamin D, it’s easy to believe that there is plenty of bone-strength to go around. But there’s more to this calcium thing. We want to touch on that here.
What is Calcium?
Do you remember that old slogan “Milk. It makes a body good.” That is because milk contains calcium, a super-mineral that supports healthy bone regeneration. That includes the jaw bone and teeth. Calcium also supports muscle function, nerve transmissions, and heart health, so it is something we all want in our diet. In the mouth, calcium plays a role in neutralizing acidity, which is vital to cavity prevention, as is the remineralization of enamel, also achieved through calcium absorption.
Now, you don’t have to drink milk or give it to your children to make sure there is sufficient calcium intake. There are several sources of calcium that can be consumed on a daily basis, and, fortunately, there is something for everyone. For children who consume dairy, calcium is found in yogurt, cheese, and even that bowl of ice cream. For the lactose-intolerant or the person who simply prefers to avoid dairy, there is value in a diet rich in leafy greens, bok choy, broccoli, and kale. Finally, supplements may be one of the most convenient ways to ensure kids (and parents!) are getting the calcium they need to support those parts of the body that rely on this mineral.

Did you know that there is 284 mg of calcium in an 8-ounce glass of milk? This is the approximate amount of daily servings a one-year-old should be getting. Toddlers need approximately 700 mg of calcium a day, and school-aged children need between 1,000 and 1,300 mg, according to the National Institutes of Health. Every half-cup of broccoli contains 21 mg, and an 8-ounce yogurt contains 415 mg. Also, a benefit to calcium supplements is that they provide just the right amount to children of all ages. In addition, they may include additional vitamins that maximize absorption and use of calcium in the body.
