It is important that every child has a good, knowledgeable, and compassionate dentist. Without key elements like patience for the unique fears and needs children have, a dentist is likely to leave a negative mark on the developing psyche. We want children to have the best first impression of dentistry possible! That is why Children 1st Dental & Surgery Center has been designed for ultimate comfort using sedation.
The value of sedation can be seen across some circumstances. Children who are especially frightened, or who need care that requires additional time. Additionally, parents of children with any degree of special needs can find the peace of mind they need when they consult and work with a qualified sedation dentist.
Children with autism have the same needs for oral care as every other child. However, if communication skills are lacking, so may cooperation. The last thing any parent wants is for their child to carry the burden of fear and stress related to necessary dental care. This is where sedation dentistry may come in very handy.
Let’s Talk about Safety
Children’s 1st is not your average dental office. Our facilities are ambulatory surgical centers that are staffed by fully trained and licensed dentists, anesthesiologists, and support staff. We know sedation, and we know it well.
Sedation dentistry may involve one of the several methods. Some patients may gain the necessary relaxation with nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas.” However, there are also situations that may require deeper sedation with an oral medication or IV administration. In all levels of sedation EXCEPT for general anesthesia, a patient can breathe and swallow without assistance.
The safety of each type of sedation has been carefully assessed over many years. In making the decision regarding the appropriateness of any particular method, we evaluate the age and the developmental stage of each patient, including cognitive abilities. You as the parent are also an integral part of the decision-making process, and we welcome your questions and statements.
