If you’re like most parents, you only want what’s best for your children – and you understand the importance of children’s dental care. But as parents ourselves, we know how difficult it is to monitor your kids each time they brush and floss. Sometimes, dental care gets left by the wayside; because kids only see the dentist once every six months, many parents forget appointments or even put off regular cleanings.
Unfortunately, though, poor children’s dental care can have long-term, detrimental effects on your kids’ dental health. The habits they develop now – including regular dental visits – can help prevent things like gum disease, tooth decay, and difficulty chewing, eating and sleeping. Poor dental hygiene leads to serious health problems – including an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease and heart disease. Other conditions that have been linked to poor oral health include:
- Endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart chambers or valves. This occurs when bacteria or other germs come from another part of the body (like the mouth) and enter the bloodstream, eventually attaching to the heart.
- Pneumonia, a serious lung infection. This can occur when bacteria from the mouth gets pulled into the lungs.

What Can You Do to Protect Your Child’s Oral Health?
Good oral hygiene begins before a child even starts teething. It’s always a good idea to wipe down your child’s gums – partly to get your little one used to oral hygiene – after he or she eats, before bed, and right after waking up.
Once your children get older, you can help them brush their teeth at least twice a day (and more often if possible, especially after eating sticky or sugary foods). Make sure you use fluoride toothpaste, which helps strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. Additionally, you can help your children:
- Floss at least once a day
- Use mouthwash to remove food particles left over after brushing and flossing
- Feed your children a healthy diet, limiting foods with added sugars
- Replace toothbrushes every three months – or sooner if the bristles become splayed or worn
- Schedule regular cleanings and check-ups with your child’s dentist
- Get in touch with your child’s dentist as soon as you suspect a problem in your child’s mouth
